Bolgatanga, Dec. 16, GNA – The Upper East Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has conferred a honourary award on Dr William Gudu, the Medical Superintendent of Bongo District Hospital, for his dedication to service.
The GJA in a citation observed with extreme satisfaction his contribution to health needs of the people of Upper East Region, mostly in rural districts and the positive impact made, especially in maternal health.
The Medical Superintendent has worked in the region for over two decades and was honoured at the maiden edition of the Upper East Regional GJA awards.
The awards, which was organised on the theme: “Sustaining the peace in the Upper East Region: the role of the media,” brought together national and regional executives of GJA including; Mr Affail Monney, the GJA President.
It was part of activities marking the 70th Anniversary celebrations of the GJA.
Dr Gudu started work in Upper East Region in 1997 at the Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga as a Medical officer, where he served for one and half years, and was posted to the Bawku West District Hospital at Zebilla from 1998 to 2004.
He was later posted to the War Memorial Hospital in Navrongo, in 2004 where he worked for two years and reposted to the Sandema District Hospital.
The Medical Doctor, who has worked as Medical Superintendent in almost all the district hospitals in the Region, started work in the Bongo District Hospital in 2011 until date.
He has over the years not opted to work in the cities.
Parts of the citation read: “By the records, you excelled in the performance of your duty everywhere you worked and have couched a positive symbol of life at the Bongo District Hospital, where families travel long distances to get antenatal services with ardent hope of successfully giving birth.”
It added: “...You have distinguished yourself, and under your watch as Medical Superintendent of the Bongo District Hospital ensured that the District recorded zero maternal health even though you work under difficult conditions.
“Your display of innovations through the use of mobile phones to coordinate, monitor and assess conditions of pregnant women from remotest distances from the District capital was “undoubtedly a great leadership skill.”
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency after the programme, Dr Gudu disclosed that the Ghana Health Service over the years also honoured him for his works and commitment, which he said regarded as “normal because professionals in the service are with me and see the work I do.”
He expressed appreciation to the GJA for the honour given to him, which showed that his works were not only recognised by his colleagues in the health service.
Apart from Dr Gudu, the GJA also conferred honorary awards on personalities who had over the years distinguished themselves in the areas of religion, education, business and arts.
They included; Reverend Eastwood Anaba, President of the Eastwood Anaba Miniseries, Professor Dr David Millar, President of Millar Institute for Transdisciplinary and Development Studies, Mr Kenneth Knewena Chief Executive Officer of Lesken Enterprise and Madam Melanie Kasise, a retired Educationist and Founder of Sirugu Women’s Organization for Pottery and Art.
