Accra, Dec. 17, GNA – Voters are trickling in to cast their ballots in the District Level Elections to elect assembly and unit committee members.
The long queues, which often characterise the start of general election, were generally missing when the Ghana News Agency Monitoring Team arrived at some of the polling stations.
At the Church of Christ Ankrah Stable in the Osudoku Electoral Area in the Korley Klottey Municipality, Mrs Christina Acquaye, the first electorate, cast her ballot at 0719 hours, though the electoral officers were set by 0700 hours.
At the Bulemin Taxi Rank ‘A’ Polling Station in the Gbawe East Electoral area , Mr Kobina Okyireh, the Presidening Officer, told the GNA that five persons out of the 906 electorate on the roll had voted more than an hour after voting began.
Things were not any different at the Bulemin C’’ Taxi Polling Station, three persons had cast their ballots, 30 minutes into the exercise.
For the District Level Elections, turn out usually peaks in the afternoon.
More than 57,030 candidates are contesting the nationwide elections.
Of the figure, 18,510 are vying to become assembly members, while 38,520 want to be in the Unit Committees.
There are a total of 6,272 electoral areas and each electoral area would be represented by one assembly member.
For the Unit Committees, there will be five for every electoral area.
However, elections would not be held in the Nkoranza North, Nkoranza South and the Lower Manya Krobo Districts, where the terms of the representatives will expire in 2022.
All the electoral materials had been distributed to the 31,851 designated polling stations across the nation.
A joint security force of 48, 000 officers and other rank had been deployed to provide security across the nation, while Coalition of Domestic Election Observers has deployed 1,100 persons to observe and monitor the polls.
Additionally, all the polling officials have received training and the Commission expects them to exhibit a high level of integrity and fairness as they complied with the tenets of the Electoral Laws.
The contestants of the District Assembly Elections comprise 17, 601 males and 909 are females.
At the Unit Committee level, 3,751 females are racing with 34,769 males.
