Bolgatanga, Dec 17, GNA – Voting in the District Level Elections (DLEs) has been smooth and peaceful in the Upper East Region.
Voters were seen standing in queues, waiting patiently for their turn to cast their ballots, when reporters of the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited a number of the polling centres in the area.
The atmosphere was relaxed with the tension and anxiety that often characterize presidential and parliamentary elections in the country, completely absent.
The exercise began on time – exactly at 0700 hours and at the Junior Staff Quarters polling station in the Tanzui Electoral Area, 35 people had voted, when the GNA got to the place.
Mr. William Akuriba, the Presiding Officer, said 679 registered voters were expected to cast their ballots there - to decide, who would represent them in the assembly.
The unit committee election in that particular electoral area could not be held because there were on two candidates – not up to five.
At the Regional House of Chiefs Polling Station in the Bukere Electoral Area, none of the 633 registered voters had shown up to vote, about an hour after voting started.
Mr. Elvis Apam, the Presiding Officer, said three people were vying to represent the area in the assembly while nine people were in the unit committee race.
At the Bukere Primary School polling station ‘A’ also in the Bukere Electoral Area, a long queue of voters was seen when the GNA made it to the place.
The same could, however, not be said about the Bukere Primary ‘B’ polling of centre as there was no voter there.
At the Akando polling station ‘A’, 51 out of the 597 registered voters had cast their ballots as of 0930 hours and at that polling stations ‘B’ and ‘C’ 16 and 40 people had cast their ballots, respectively.
