Accra, Dec. 16, GNA – Ghanaian football legend, Samuel Osei Kuffour has asserted that, the recent investments of astroturfs will not aid the development of local football talents in Ghana.
The government has made it a priority to construct one astroturf in every constituency as they look to develop sports and produce the next generation of football stars.
But according to iconic football star, the construction of astroturf would not help the development of football talents and could affect the quality of players we produce in the near future.
“For me, astroturfs are not the best for our football especially the kids. The Europeans are stopping the usage of astroturfs but we trying to implement it here.
“Astro turfs would not aid the technical abilities that these young kids require because astroturfs are static. The use of astroturf does not aid talents development because most these kids don’t use the right football boots to play on these fields and they could get career-threatening injuries and cut short their talents,’’ he said.
He also urged the government to invest in football infrastructure across the country if we want to get positive results in the near future.
‘The structures have to be there to help develop these talents. The lack of football infrastructures could hinder our participation in future World Cups if we don’t do things.
“For how long can we depend on the likes of Dede Ayew, so it’s about investing in the structures so that we would produce enough talents to facilitate our participation in future subsequent World Cups,’’ he stated.
