Accra, Dec. 17, GNA - President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Tuesday, swore-into office three new Supreme Court Judges, with a call to them to use their experience at the Appeals Court to strengthen the Apex Court.
They are Justice Mariama Owusu, Justice Lovelace Johnson and Justice Getrude Araba Torkono.
They replace three female Justices, two of them retired in February and September, this year,- Justice Vida Akoto Bamfo and Justice Sofia Adinyirah, and Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo, who will be retiring on Friday, December 20.
President Akufo-Addo at an induction ceremony held at the Jubilee House, congratulated the Judges on their appointment, which he termed as “well deserved and merited”.
“You have all met the stringent requirements of the Constitution…You are deemed to have independence of spirit, proven integrity, moral character, and impartiality of mind to hold this high office.”
He added that the post-1996 Supreme Court had developed a positive reputation for the quality of its constitutional jurisprudence and expressed the hope their experience at the Appeals Court would reflect in their work at the Supreme Court.
He was confident that the good experience would help strengthen the development of the nation’s constitutional and other jurisprudence in the Supreme Court.
Justice Mariama Owusu, on behalf of her other colleagues, thanked the President for the honour done them, pledging that they would discharge their duties with diligence and abide by the Judicial Oaths.
The Supreme Court now has 16 judges with the inclusion of the three. The number will reduce to 15 when Chief Justice Sophia Akufo bows out on December 20.
