Tarkwa (W/R), Dec. 18, GNA - The Apinto Divisional Council has donated items and foodstuffs worth 8,000 Ghana cedis to two institutions in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality of the Western Region.
The donations were made separately to the Tarkwa Local Prison and the Angles of Hope Orphanage.
The items included cooking oil, washing power, milk, milo, toilet rolls, baby diapers, assorted soaps, sanitary pads, bunches of plantain, and bags of gari, maize and rice.
In an interview with Ghana News Agency (GNA) after the presentation, Nana Adarkwa Bediako III, Gyasehene of Apinto Divisional Council, said the goodwill formed part of the activities to celebrate this year’s Amankuma Festival.
Nana Bediako said it was also a way of contributing their widow’s mite to the less privileged and needy in society.
As custodians of the Apinto land they have decided to spend time with citizens, who did not have much support throughout the year, he said.
He said the Tarkwa Local Prison had only one rehabilitation centre, which was for sewing, and called on philanthropists and organistions to assist in establishing a carpentry workshop there to help train the inmates.
Nana Bediako said authorities of the Prison requested for a set of drums for the inmates during worship and paints to beautify the environment, and assured them that the request would be fulfilled.
Assistant Director of Prison, Kwaku Ali Ababio, Commander in charge of the Tarkwa local prison, expressed appreciation to the Apinto Divisional Council for supporting the inmates.
Madam Esi Atobam, Founder of Angles of Hope Orphanage, commended the Council for assisting her home and appealed to other benevolent institutions to go to her aid.
The Council earlier embarked on a health walk from the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) Basic School through the principal streets of Tarkwa to ensure the well-being of residents.
