Kpone (GAR), Dec. 21, GNA - The Kpone -Katamanso Municipal Assembly has inaugurated its local youth parliament at Kpone, in the Greater Accra Region.
Delivering a key note adress on the theme, "The state of drug abuse amongst the youth," Mr. Solomon Tettey Appiah Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Kpone -Katamanso, said parliament remains the pivot around which democracy revolves and that the legislature was crucial to the survival of every democracy.
He said when the youth were given the opportunity to discuss issues affecting them, society benefitted in a positive way.
Mr. Appiah asked members of the Youth Parliament to deliberate on the menace of the drug abuse and its diverse effect on them.
The MCE said the Youth Parliament was a brilliant initiative of the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP) as it offered young people the opportunity to actively participate and have a feel of how business was carried out in Ghana's Parliament and prepare them for the future.
Mrs. Janice Annaman- Mensah, Kpone Katamanso Municipal Director of National Youth Authority (NYA), revealed that members of the Municipal youth parliament were drawn from all 18 local electoral areas.
She noted that the members had shown much commitment to the task given them.
"We don't even pay them but they are always available to contribute towards the progress of the youth Parliament," she said.
Mr. Mensah explained that one of the concepts behind the youth parliament was to offer the youth the platform to use dialogue as a means to address their issues.
She added that the youth parliament would also build the confidence of members as they maneuvered their way to their future responsibilities.
Currently, the Kpone Katamanso youth parliament has 30 members with Mr. Francis Paa Kwesi Badu as the Speaker , Mr. Emmanuel Yaw Okyere, Majority leader and Mr. Godson Amon Kotey, as the Minority leader.
