Bawku (UE), Dec. 23, GNA - The Chiefs and people of the Bawku area in the Upper East Region are preparing to celebrate the 32nd Samanpiid festival on December 27, with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo expected to grace the occasion.
The festival, celebrated every year is focused on promoting unity, peace and harnessing the economic, social and cultural heritage of the people for the development of the area.
The theme is; “Harnessing the Economic, Social and Cultural Heritage for the Development of the Kusaug Traditional area”.
The traditional festival is celebrated by the Chiefs and People of the Bawku (Kusasi) Traditional Area to mark the end of the year and commend the ancestral spirits for their protection and blessings.
Mr Emmanuel Abariga, the Secretary of the Planning Committee for the festival in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Bawku, said through the activities of the Samanpiid, peace had returned to the area and economic activities such as trading and other business activities had begun to boom, while vibrant social activities had picked up and the people were relaxed and living normal lives once more.
“For the successful achievement of the theme, there must be undisrupted peace in the area and the paramount Chief, Naba Asigri Abugragoe Azoka II, has been working to ensure that the peace is maintained”.
Mr Abariga said the Chief had been in constant dialogue with all feuding parties and supported the Bawku Inter-Ethnic Peace Committee (BIEPC) in championing the course of peace in the area, “this among other efforts has brought the area back to quality livelihood after the protracted chieftaincy conflict,” he added.
Mr Abariga said the festival had promoted agricultural activities by educating farmers to embrace government’s agricultural programmes such as the planting for food and jobs and rearing for food and jobs among other things.
He said as part of efforts to promote the “Bawku one people agenda” local policy, the festival had created the enabling peaceful atmosphere to enrich the social and cultural lives of the people which was also encouraging other tribes in Bawku to celebrate the various religious festivals in the area.
The secretary urged the people to keep pushing for a better Bawku community since it was the only place God had assigned them to live, saying “Bawku can be made a unique community for investors and other development partners to come and work”.
