Accra, Dec. 23, GNA – The Ghana Police Service on Monday said “Operation Father Christmas,” launched by the Inspector General of Police, Mr James Oppong-Boanuh, to curtail crime this season was making strides.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr David Senanu Eklu, said the operation has injected dynamism into the personnel who have intensified patrols and also with plain clothes men in the field to protect lives and properties and to maintain general safety.
ACP Eklu who is also the Director General of the Public Affairs Unit (PAU) told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that, as a result of Operation Father Christmas, five persons have been arrested in Assin Fosu in the Central Region for illegally manufacturing fire arms.
Giving general overview of the operation, ACP Eklu said there have been some arrests on some highways across the country involving robbers; “we have arrested Highway Robbers in Northern region”.
He said the Operational team is monitoring activities of some robbers in the Central Region; “We are yet to make any arrest but the team is on the heels of the robbers. You cannot hide we will chase you out from the highways to make the road safe for all”.
He said there were senior police officers in commanding positions on various electronic media platforms sharing relevant security tips within their jurisdiction using local languages.
He hinted that the IGP had just finished a meeting with selected some Regional Commanders to help strategize on how best to maintain peace and order, especially during the Christmas festivity.
Operation Father Christmas which was launched on November 26, this year, in Accra was to mobilise materials as well as human resources to prevent crime, reduce accidents and show Police presence in public places where people congregate such as churches, beaches, among others.
He said it was later replicated in the other regions and a total of 15,000 police personnel have been deployed nationwide in addition to highway patrols before, during and after the Christmas celebrations.
The Director General of Police PAU said the impact of police’s presence was to ensure security and public safety.
