Accra, Dec. 23, GNA – The Police Service on Monday outlined security guidelines cautioning the public to be vigilant as the incidents of theft and burglary tend to be on the increase during yuletide.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr David Senanu Eklu told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that the best thing to do is to take precautionary measures at all times.
He urged people to mark belongings with indelible identification, lock up homes, cars and trucks and if one travels, the person should get someone to check on one’s home by asking a friend or neighbour to check on the house every now and then and give updates.
ACP Eklu who is also the Director General of the Public Affairs Unit (PAU) cautioned that the public to be cautious when buying goods being sold at prices cheaper than the reasonable market value because they could be stolen items.
“People should also avoid late night outings if they can and be careful about what they shared, more importantly on social media; do not reveal sensitive personal information, for example, home address, financial information, phone number,” he said.
He advised that outside lights be left on at night or be set with a timer to switch on at night, adding that, there must always be a light on even if one was not at home.
ACP Eklu also warned that when people detects faults in their door locks, alarm systems or smoke detectors, they should repaired them immediately and that security devices such as Closed Circuit Television should be regularly checked to ensure they are in order.
“All door locks and windows should be checked anytime one returned from outside and door blinds or curtains may help prevent robbers from looking inside the home and being tempted by the valuables they see,” he said.
