Ho, Dec. 24, GNA - Ele Afe Le Gbe (Our Culture Our Heritage), an Ewe culture radio show on the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC’s) Volta Star Radio in Ho, has won the Radio Programme of the year award at the 2019 Ghana Arts and Cultural Awards.
The show, produced and presented by Benjamin Kwami Vidzreku, popularly known as “Little Ben”, competed with programmes aired by radio stations from across the country.
Mr Vidzreku told the Ghana News Agency (GNA), that the aim of the show was to promote the Ewe language, which was the mother tongue of many in the Volta Region.
“Today you cannot find youth who speak their native language in its purity”, he lamented, adding that the language risked losing its potency and richness, when not well spoken, hence the programme.
Mr Vidzreku said the neglect of language was the neglect of culture, and appealed to traditional authorities to help preserve local languages.
“People must show concern for language. Neglect of one’s language is neglect of one’s culture”, he said.
Mr Vidzreku dedicated the award to the Acting Director of Volta Star Radio, Mr John Gadawusu, in recognition of his support and encouragement for the programme.
He also said the award stood in recognition of his colleagues and listeners.
The award ceremony, which was on the theme “Rewarding Excellence in Arts and Culture”, came off at the Accra International Conference Centre on December 07, 2019.
