Agavenya (E/R), Dec. 24, GNA - Mr Kwabena Dartey, the Acting Eastern Regional Director of Department of Children, has warned landlords whose houses are used to perpetrate acts of sexual abuse by their tenants that they could be prosecuted.
Mr Dartey was speaking at a forum organized by the International Child Development Programme (ICDP) in collaboration with Plan International, Ghana as part of the celebration of the 16 days activism against gender-based violence at Agavenya in New Juaben South Municipality in the Eastern Region.
The forum was organized under the Girls Advocacy Alliance (GAA) project which is funded by the Netherlands Foreign Ministry.
Mr Dartey said any parent who does not send the child to school could be prosecuted and if found guilty could be fined GHC 500.00 or go to jail for a year.
He said it is against the law for parents to refuse the naming of a child because by law, every child should have a name; and it is criminal for anybody to give out a girl below 18 years for marriage.
More so, he said, it is against the law for rape cases to be settled outside the court.
Mr Richard Densu of the Guidance and Counseling Unit of the New Juaben South Municipal Office of the Ghana Education Service (GES), expressed concern about the rising cases of fathers attempting to rape their step daughters in the municipality.
He urged mothers to listen to the complains of their daughters, protect and nurture them.
Mr J. K. Adeviade, Headteacher of Agavenya Roman Catholic School, said government cannot provide all the educational needs of their children and appealed to parents to complement the efforts of government.
Ms Joyce Lanyo, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ICDP, called on parents to establish and maintain a communication link with their children in the effort to guide them.
She called on mothers to stop encouraging their daughters to go in for boyfriends saying such practices could lead to teenage pregnancies and the school dropouts of their daughters.
