Accra, Dec 24, GNA - Mr Isaac Kwadwo Asante, the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Dansoman Divisional Police Command, has entreated the public to double check calls and messages they receive from supposed relatives before acting to avoid being defrauded.
He said with the increase in police visibility during the yuletide, violent crimes were likely to reduce, however, crimes via online and other means were likely to soar.
He, therefore, cautioned the public to be vigilant in replying to request they receive from purported relatives.
ACP Asante gave the advice in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday in Accra.
He said: “We know that during seasons like this, people start sending goods to their relatives and criminals also capitalise on that. I will want to advise people that they should be wary of fraudsters because if they cannot commit violent crimes, they would rather use fraudulent means such as mobile money scams to get what they want.
“If you even have a relative outside and somebody calls you impersonating them that they have sent you something, be double sure and call the person and find out if truly they have sent something. Don’t let us be quick and accept any call because most of these people are using unknown numbers and I am sure some even have foreign numbers and they are using them and so let us be a bit wise in accepting such calls.”
Touching on criminal activities recorded so far in his jurisdiction, Mr Asante said crime rate reduced drastically this festive period, a success he attributed to the deployment of over 15,000 police personnel, both uniform and non-uniform across the country by the Ghana Police Service.
He said the service also embarked on numerous sensitisation programmes to conscientise the public on criminal activities all geared towards ensuring a safe yuletide.
“I can confidently say that so far so good, a lot of awareness has been undertaken within the jurisdiction. I will say that for violent crimes, we have had only one robbery case recorded which involved car hijacking. According to the driver, they took his money and phone. The hijackers included; a woman and two men, but apart from that the crimes we are recording are the usual assaults and petty stealing cases,” ACP Asante said.
He, however, expressed concern over the lack of discipline among drivers on the roads, a situation he said was to blame for the massive traffic congestions experienced within the municipality and the city at large.
While assuring the public, particularly residents within his jurisdiction of his office’s commitment in ensuring that it brought crime rates to its barest minimum, he urged them, especially the youth to be security cautious including; those they mingle with during the yuletide to avert any unforeseen issues.
