Tamale, Dec 24, GNA - National Road Safety Authority (NRSA)has urged religious and traditional authorities to educate people on road safety when using the road, especially during the Yuletide.
It also advised political actors to encourage their members to ensure accident-free-campaigns in the upcoming 2020 elections.
This, the NRSA indicated, would help to reduce rates of accidents on the roads to ensure salvation, peace, development among others, towards the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ and the forthcoming 2020 elections.
Mr Alexander Atiibo Ayatah, the Regional Director of the NRSA for the Northern, North East and Savannah Regions, gave the advice in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Tamale.
He indicated that the three regions in the first three quarters of 2019, recorded a decrease in road accidents by - 27.9 per cent death rate with 147 deaths out of 192 accidents in 2018 as against 106 deaths out of 223 accidents in 2019 .
He said there was also a decrease in injury rate by -18.5 per cent in 2019 with 741 persons sustaining various degrees of injuries in 2018 as against 605 persons injured in 2019.
Mr Ayeta said the authority together with other state institutions, had been carrying out series of road safety education and campaign in schools, churches, mosques, lorry stations, radio programmes among others to advocate road safety.
These activities, he said, were carried out in the regions with much focus on eight areas, where accidents mostly occur including; the Tamale Metropolis, Sawla-Kalba, Bole Bamboi, West Mamprusi, Yendi, Savelugu, Buipe and Damongo roads.
He said the authority also established road safety ambassadors including; the Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II, Overlord of Dagbon and trained about 300 commercial drivers to apply the Concentrations, Observation, Anticipation and Tolerance (COAT) approach.
He urged both motorbike riders and pillion riders to wear protective helmets and avoid picking more than one person when riding.
He advised the entire citizenry to be cautious and take responsibility for their safety on the road and wished members of the public Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year.
