Obuasi (Ash), Dec 31, GNA - Ninety-two (92) youth in Obuasi East District have begun an apprenticeship programme to acquire practical skills to make them self-employable.
The training programme is being organized by the District Assembly in conjunction with Obuasi Business Advisory Centre (BAC) of the National Board for Small Scale Enterprises (NBSSI) under the Youth in Apprenticeship Programme (YAP).
The beneficiaries would receive a three-year training in welding and fabrication, tailoring and dressmaking.
Madam Faustina Amissah, the District Chief Executive (DCE), speaking at a ceremony for the youth to start the programme, said it was the vision of the government that, the youth who could not continue to the tertiary level after their free senior high education, would enter into technical and vocational training to acquire skills for self-employment.
She advised the trainees to be determined and focus on the kind of trade they had selected to acquire the requisite knowledge and skills that would help them to become useful and resourceful in future.
Madam Amissah urged them to be studious and put away all difficulties and problems and concentrate on the training to become masters in their field of learning.
This was the only way they could lead responsible lives in the future for the benefit of themselves, their families and society.
They should also learn to put the skills acquired after the training at the disposal of other youth in their communities to enable them to also benefit.
Mr. Kelvin Ofori Atta, Head of Obuasi Business Advisory Center (BAC), said the District Assembly was paying for all the expenses involve in the training programme and urged the trainees to be serious and commit themselves to ensure successful completion.
He appealed to parents of the trainees to provide the needed support to enable their wards go through the apprenticeship programme successfully.
