Long-serving CAF leader Issa Hayatou was voted out of office because CAF members wanted change and were also convinced by Ahmad’s good message, according to Ghana Football Association chief Kwesi Nyantakyi.
Nyantakyi was very excited after Madagascar’s Ahmad Ahmad ended Hayatou’s 29 years reign as president of the largest football confederation by number on Thursday in Addis Ababa. Ahmad polled 34 votes whilst Issa Hayatou got 20 of the total valid votes cast.
“Ahmad won because he was a good candidate, he came with a message which most people supported and secondly the wind of change that was blowing is embraced worldwide including the world of football.”
“Everyone thought that this was the time for change and nothing could stop the change.”
Kwesi Nyantakyi was also re-elected for the second term on the FIFA Council after securing 33 votes to beat Tanzania's Leodegar Tenga who got 20.
