Members from the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy’s (SC) Community Engagement Division recently attended a sports and culture festival organised by the Ghanaians in Qatar Association (GIQA).
More than 400 people attended the event at Simaisma Youth Centre, which was funded by the SC’s Community Grant Scheme.
Guests enjoyed a range of activities, including football, beach volleyball and table tennis, along with traditional music and singing.
The GIQA’s Dr Paul Amuna praised the SC during his welcome remarks and said his organisation was committed to promoting football and integration in the lead-up to 2022.
“This festival is made possible by the Supreme Committee’s Community Grant Scheme,” said Dr Amuna.
“The scheme helps communities like ours showcase our beautiful culture and passion for sport, while contributing to the rich cultural tapestry of life in Qatar.”
“We strongly value our relationship with the Supreme Committee and look forward to contributing to the football and cultural legacy of the 2022 World Cup,” added Dr Amuna.
Khalid Al Jumaily, the SC’s Community Engagement Manager, praised the GIQA for its commitment to promoting sport and culture in Qatar.
“The SC is proud to fund events such as this which strengthen cultural ties in our country,” said Al Jumaily.
“We have a close relationship with members of the Ghanaian community after they volunteered at some major SC events, including the Community Festival and Khalifa Stadium Appreciation Dinner. We look forward to further strengthening our relationship with the GIQA over the next four years and beyond.”
The SC’s Community Grant Scheme aims to bring communities together from across Qatar and provide groups with the means to improve their neighbourhoods. Applications must aim to use football as a tool for social and human development, apply creative approaches to increasing participation in football, create opportunities for young people aged 16-24, support people with disabilities, promote solidarity regardless of gender, nationality, faith or culture, and leave a lasting legacy with the capacity to be self-sustaining in the future.
