A former England and Premier League footballer was arrested at Stansted Airport over the weekend on suspicion of attempted rape, Essex Police confirmed.
The suspect, who played for England during the 2010s, was detected at passport control by Border Force officers shortly before he was due to board a flight.
For legal reasons, his identity cannot be disclosed at this stage.
"After arrest, the suspect has been bailed to a date in late February 2026 while we continue our enquiries," said an Essex Police spokesperson. The arrest follows a non-recent allegation related to the offence.
Under UK law, suspects in sexual-offence investigations generally enjoy anonymity until charges are brought, to protect the fairness of proceedings and guard against undue reputational damage.
Because the case remains at an investigatory stage, no further identifying details will be published. Police and media outlets stress that publication of the suspect’s name before formal charge could breach legal protections and prejudice any future trial.
Essex Police confirmed the individual was held on suspicion of attempted rape. Investigations are ongoing, with no charges filed at present.
