VfB Stuttgart are easing Justin Diehl carefully back into competitive action after his ligament injury in the ankle sidelined him for several weeks.
The attacking player is expected to collect his first minutes next week with the club’s second team, marking the next step in yet another rebuilding phase for the 21-year-old.
Head coach Sebastian Hoeneà explained on Friday why Diehl is not yet an option for this matchday against Rot-Weiss Essen, even though he has been able to train intensively again for some time.
"There was talk of Justin playing for the reserve team. But we want to give him another week to train more," he said.
Hoeneà added that, due to numerous recent trips, he has “not seen enough to say with complete conviction that he's ready ”, so the attacking youngster will have to wait a little longer.
For Diehl, the plan is to regain a consistent rhythm that has repeatedly been broken by injuries in recent seasons. He has been knocked off course several times by various setbacks, and Stuttgart now want to use appearances with the reserves to help him fight his way back toward the first-team squad.
