Sudan head coach Kwesi Appiah has set his sights on claiming the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.
The Falcons of Jediane have been drawn into Group D, facing Algeria, Burkina Faso, and Equatorial Guinea.
Speaking ahead of the tournament’s kick-off in Morocco this weekend, Appiah emphasized that mere participation will not suffice.
“The goal is not just to participate but to fight for the trophy. I believe with the right mentality, we can achieve it. There’s no point in going to the competition if you don’t aim to win," he told Akoma FM.
On their group opponents, Appiah stressed confidence over fear.
“We respect them, but we will not fear them. If you go into games thinking about names like Messi or Ronaldo, you lose the battle mentally before it begins.”
Sudan’s AFCON campaign begins against Algeria’s Fennec Foxes on Wednesday, December 24, at Moulay Hassan Stadium. They will then face Equatorial Guinea on Sunday, December 28, at Stade Mohammed V, before closing the group stage against Burkina Faso on Wednesday, December 31, at the same venue.
The tournament marks Sudan’s return to Africa’s premier football competition following their last appearance in Cameroon, where they were eliminated in the group stage.
