The Ghana Football Association has laid out a bold, dual objective for the Black Queens at this year's Women's Africa Cup of Nations: secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup and compete to win the continental title.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum made the team's ambitions clear. "We've got two things on our mind going into this tournament," Asante Twum told Citi Sports. "First, we want to qualify for the World Cup. Then, we also want to fight for the title."
Ghana has been drawn into a challenging Group A alongside Cameroon, Mali, and Cape Verde for the competition set to be hosted by Morocco.
The Black Queens are aiming to build on their bronze-medal performance from the last WAFCON edition, where they narrowly lost to eventual champions and hosts Morocco in the semi-finals.
"We came very, very close," Asante Twum reflected on the previous campaign. "Within a year, we believe we should be able to go a step further. But it will be one step at a time."
The GFA official acknowledged the difficulty of the group but expressed confidence in the team's readiness and growing quality, which he attributes to sustained investment in the women's game.
"We are in a very tight group with teams we have faced before. We know what they bring to the table, and we are well prepared for the challenge," he said.
Despite a rich history in women's football, Ghana has never won the African championship, a fact that adds extra motivation. The GFA has vowed to provide the necessary backing to end that wait.
"We will leave no stone unturned. We will continue to invest, motivate and push these players to go all the way," Asante Twum stressed. "We believe that when the tournament comes, the girls will make Ghanaians proud."
