Mr. Kyere submitted as a seasonal crop, relying solely on cocoa production is risky business which can leave the farmer destitute in the event of poor yields or an Act of God or even when the cocoa season is over.
He said oil palm and coconuts are high income yielding cash crops but most farmers in the country are oblivious of the many positives of the two items adding “if you are a farmer and you have at least one acre of these crops, you will never call for financial support because when the cocoa season is over, the oil palm or the coconut will be available to help in other ways.”
He called on the government to introduce a policy like the existing cocoa mass spraying exercise as well as other policies supporting cocoa farmers to develop interest in planting other cash crops. Read Full Story
