CAF has nominated seven legends of the game on the continent to be ambassadors of the competition but despite producing some of the greatest players on the continent, no Ghanaian player was handed that role by CAF.
Surprisingly, no explanation was offered by CAF over the selection procedure but some Ghanaians are unhappy with the decision to snub their legends including Abedi Pele who currently holds the record for the most appearances in the CAF competition.
The seven players who were settled on by CAF are Mahmoud El-Khatib (Egypt), Samuel Eto'o (Cameroon), Yaya Toure, Didier Drogba (Cote d'Ivoire), Rabah Madjer (Algeria),Nwankwo Kanu (Nigeria) and El Hadji Diouf (Senegal) as the seven ambassadors for the competition in Egypt.
Eto’o, the Camerounian legend is a four-time CAF Player of the Year (2003, 2004, 2005 & 2010), and has also won the Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon in 2000 and 2002.
Ivorian legend, Didier Drogba who has made five appearances in the competition (2006, 2008, 2010, 2012 & 2013) besides wining the CAF Player of the Year twice – 2006 & 2009, is one of two Cote d’Ivoire players to have been chosen.
His compatriot, Yaya Toure who also boast of winning the continent’s best player accolade for four times in a row (2011, 2012, 2013 &2014) also got the nod.
Algeria’s Madjer, Kanu who represented Nigeria in the CAF competition for six times and winning the continental gong twice in 19969 and 1999 as well as Diouf who is the only Senegalese to have won the continent’s best player in 2001 and 2002 complete the impressive achievement of the selected ambassadors.
