The Ghanaian lost to the Mexican title holder via a fourth round technical knockout in the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) super welterweight championship at the Dignity Health Sports Park, Carson, in California, USA.
Allotey’s unbeaten run ends
Allotey, 28, who went into the fight without his longtime trainer, Kwasi Ofori Asare, was outclassed by his Mexican who reportedly had problems making the weight for the fight.
In the absence of his trainer Asare, who could not travel to the United States for unexplained reasons, the Ghanaian boxer had to rely on with a caretaker trainer provided in the US by his managers at the eleventh hour.
The Ghanaian struggled to match up to Munguia, visiting the canvas three times before his corner threw in the title in the fourth round.
It was Allotey’s fourth career loss and his first defeat since November 2016.
Asare disappointed
In an exclusive interview with the Daily Graphic in Accra, Asare expressed his disappointment at Allotey’s managers, Cabic Promotions, for their failure to secure him a visa to travel to he USA with the boxer, a situation he said contributed to the boxer’s poor performance.
“Hours before the bout, he (Allotey) told me he was not happy and felt disappointed but we can only know exactly what he is not happy about when he returns to Ghana,” Coach Asare revealed, who described his botched travel arrangements as “surprising and strange”.
“I was told they [Cabic Promotions] have applied for the visa for me already so I shouldn’t worry, but later someone informed me that the Graphic Sports had reported that they have secured a new coach for Allotey, so I was confused,” he stated.
“Later, I was informed that my visa date for an interview was not due so they were leaving me behind. I found it very surprising and strange.”
