The 45-year-old former Kumasi Asante Kotoko manager was introduced to the technical team of the Black Stars as deputy to replace Coach Ibrahim Tanko who has been handed the Black Meteors team to handle.
"Coach C.K Akonnor has coached other top teams in Ghana, I also believe It is time to give other local coaches the opportunity to get closer to the national team to know what happens here and also to know the players," Coach Appiah told the press after a post training session with the Stars last Monday, at the Accra Sports stadium
Coach Akonnor joined Monday’s Black Stars training session as part of the technical team acting as the deputy coach of the team.
Coach Appiah further explained that by introducing local coaches to the national team it build their capacity so that when he is off the scene there would be no need for the country to fall on expatriate coaches.
“I have always said going back to white coaches will not go well with us. One day I will leave as the Black Stars coach who then do we rely on? We should go back to local coaches, so it’s important others are given the opportunity", he said.
Coach Appiah and his technical team will lead the Black Stars on Thursday, November 14, as they play the 2021 AFCON qualifier against South Africa and Principe and Sao Tome on November 18.
