According to Mr Deen, as part of the NPC’s responsibility to ensure individual para athletes gained more slots to represent the country at the Paralympics, his outfit was putting measures in place to achieve that objective.
In an interview with Graphic Sports last Wednesday, Mr Deen revealed that the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the NPC had secured a sponsorship package from the Iranian Ambassador and other stakeholders to host series of training camps for the athletes.
“All the individual para athletes will be engaging in series of intensive training so they can prepare well to enhance our athletes to get more qualification for the Olympic Games, as well as win laurels at the Paralympic Games.”
He said as part of the NPC’s efforts, series of individual sports training, including the Para Powerlifting team, were in Iran to prepare towards the World Para Powerlifting Cup Championship in Abuja. They are also billed to compete in Manchester in March for the Para-lifting Cup Championship.
Also, the para athletes who participated at the World Athletics Championship in Dubai will be in Tunisia in March for a tournament, while taekwondo, football and other teams and all the individual sports will engage in various training activities to make a significant impact.
“Fortunately for us, we are grateful to God that our preparation is on solid ground and things are going on well. We are hoping for the first time, Ghana will have at least six athletes qualifying on merit to represent the country.”
He further called on Ghanaians to have faith in the paralympics as the future of para sports looked bright, as they had always given hope to the country with their performance for winning medals during the Paralympics Games.
“The Paralympics has always given Ghana hope. We will do well and I hope our athletes qualify so they go to Tokyo in Japan to do well,” he said.
