The Obiba Foundation, which with the support of other patriotic organizations recently embarked on a nationwide pro-peace campaign road show as its contribution to the just concluded December 7, 2016 general elections has described the turnout and general comportment of Ghanaians during the period as exemplary.
In a statement issued in Accra, the foundation said ‘Ghana Peace Campaign 2016 has been successful in its objective of protecting the peace in Ghana towards the 2016 elections and beyond.’
The Ghana Peace Campaign which was an initiative of the Obiba Foundation; a non- profit organization that provides humanitarian needs to the less privileged in society was launched on August 18, 2016 in Accra. Members of the peace delegation went on a campaign which took them to all regional capitals where opinion leaders pledged and endorsed the symbol, the calabash.
The campaign was concluded with a massive open air free concert at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park which saw members of the diplomatic, the clergy, and royalty among others exhorting Ghanaians to vote for peace, not violence.
According to the organizers of Ghana Peace Campaign 2016 the unique symbol of the calabash, which is common to all ethnic groups in Ghana also helped in disseminating the message.
‘The calabash is common to all of us as it has unique use as a cultural tool – it is in harvesting or collecting water, administering medication, serving water or drinks in the household and on traditional occasions. We all know that the calabash, irrespective of its use, cannot serve that purpose efficiently when it is broken even when mended. And just like the calabash if we break up the country as a result of violent struggle for power, it will hinder growth and development, for us as a people and a nation,’ the statement continued.
Among the many dignitaries who endorsed the Ghana Peace symbolic calabash for peace were His Excellency John Dramani Mahama and President Elect Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo.
Others are the Asantehene Otumfuor Osei Tutu II, Togbe Afede XIV Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State and newly elected president of the National House of Chiefs, Osaabarimba Kwesi Atta the Omanhene of Cape Coast, Hon.
