Nii Bortey Klan I, Chief of Klangon, a town along the Lashibi-Ashaiman highway, has called on chiefs in the country to focus their attention on developing areas under their jurisdiction, as that is one of their major preoccupations.
According to the Chief, who hails from Nungua in the Greater Accra Region, the number one bee in the bonnet of chiefs across the length and breadth of the country is championing the development of the people, saying it could be in the areas of education and health among others.
He has, therefore, called on Ghanaian chiefs to emulate the shining examples of chiefs such as the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XVI and Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin II.
He explained that the three chiefs, whose names have been mentioned above, have dedicated their lives and resources for the betterment of not only people within their jurisdictions, but most importantly, people from other tribes, localities, districts and regions.
Throwing more light on his own achievements as the Klangon Mantse, Nii Bortey Klan I, known in private life as Mr. Samuel Nii Bortey Kofi, said in his own small way as a divisional Chief, he has managed to bring life to his community.
Explaining further, he said he was duly selected by the elders of his family, nominated, enstooled and outdoored, as custom demands, as the Chief of Klangon 13 years ago.
Nii Klangon, as he is affectionately called, continued that nine years later, he was gazetted, meaning his name was entered into the National Register, which contains the names of recognised chiefs in Ghana.
The hard working Chief, who is also a Chemist at the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), posited that his reign had not been without a fight, as he had to fight to overcome some insurmountable challenges that came his way.
Continuing, the Klangon Mantse noted that he had to organise himself properly with the assistance of his family to battle against all the odds that stood his way, until victory became his at long last.
After his enstoolment as Klangon Mantse, he observed that there was chaos and confusion between the peoples of Klangon and neighbouring Adjei-Kojo, and so he hit the road running to find an amicable solution to the problem between the two neighbouring towns, adding, “Today, there is absolute peace in the area.”
Under his watch, Klangon has seen fast development. Through his initiative, and with the help of a former Minister who lives in the area, almost all the roads in the town have been constructed and tarred.
Also, street lights have been beaming on all the streets of Klangon. He also organised the residents, and under his leadership, they have constructed a police station at Klangon to provide security for the people. Indeed, the Klangon village, he inherited, has blossomed into a beautiful town with modern architectural buildings.
He has also promoted the area as a preferred business destination, which has encouraged a number of business concerns to establish factories and companies, which has helped create job opportunities for some of the youth in the area.
Under his influence, he managed to get Unilever Ghana Limited to construct a 16-seater toilet facility for the TMA Basic School in Klangon for the children. Not forgetting a modern market he organizsed the residents to construct.
Again, under his watch, there is an ongoing construction of a 16-seater public place of convenience, and washrooms for those who don’t have those facilities in their respective houses, constructed at a cost of GH¢150.000.
To ensure that the security of the area is not compromised, Nii Klangon and the people have constructed a police station at an estimated cost of GH¢450.000, with majority of the funds coming from the resources of the indefatigable Chief of the area.
And to ensure that the feud between his people and people from Adjei-Kojo does not rear its ugly head ever again, he instituted an annual football competition between the youths of the two towns, dubbed ‘Annual football games between Klangon 11 and Adjei-Kojo 11’.
The Klangon Mantse has personally and solely financed this annual football fun game from his resources.
The fun game, which started about 11 years ago, has helped to cement the peace in the area, and also brought top notch political personalities to grace the occasion and talk to the youth of both has pledged to continue to do so and protect the people, as well as continue to bring development to the town.
