Outgoing Speaker of the 6th Parliament of the 4th Republic of Ghana, Edward Doe Adjaho has ordered all Members of Parliament (MPs) who lost their seats at the just ended parliamentary elections to, as a matter of urgency, start packing out of their offices before January 6, 2017.
This, he said would enable the newly elected MPs to occupy those offices as soon as they are sworn into office.
The Speaker made these assertions yesterday in his opening remarks at the beginning of the eighth sitting of the third meeting of the sixth Parliament of the fourth republic.
According to him, he had set an example by packing out of the Speakers’ office and urged the defeated parliamentarians to follow suit.
“To those who are not coming back to the House, let me reassure you by saying that the God of the mountain is still the God of the valley. You may find solace in the incontestable truth that, with God as your anchor, there is indeed a life beyond parliament,” he noted.
Continuing, he said, “In this regard, I urge all of you non-returning members to leave these parliamentary precincts with enthusiasm with hope, and demonstrate same by packing out and vacating your respective offices by 6th of January, 2017, in order to facilitate a smooth transition for the incoming MPs elected to replace you.”
He explained: “To serve as an example, I have myself as Speaker, already packed and only awaiting the conclusion of our final proceedings so as to vacate the Speakers’ Office to enable the incoming Speaker assume his role seamlessly.”
Meanwhile, Speaker Adjaho extended gratification of the House that another former member of the House had been elected to the high office of the President of Ghana, while congratulating him on his victory at the election.
Nonetheless, he charged the President elect, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to bring his understanding and wealth of parliamentary experience to bear on his executive office, having served as an MP for three consecutive terms.
“It is the fervent hope of this House that this will culminate in an epoch of mutual respect and strengthened symbiotic relations between the Executive and the Legislative organs of State,” he opined.
On the other hand, the outgoing Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho described as a demonstration of ‘ high level of statesmanship,’ President Mahama’s call to Nana Addo to concede defeat and appealing to his party supporters to also accept the outcome of the elections.
Interestingly, the outgoing President John Mahama and President-elect Nana Addo went to Parliament the same year, served for the same consecutive terms, and left Parliament the same year.
Whilst President Mahama was the MP for the Bole Constituency, Nana Akufo-Addo on the other hand represented the Abuakwa South Constituency.
Doe Adjaho, also commended the Electoral Commission, the security agencies, religious bodies and civil society organizations, development partners as well as both local and international observers for their respective roles in ensuring that the 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections were conducted in a generally free and fair manner.
Again, he urged the good people of Ghana to take pride in the blessings of peace and tranquility bestowed on the country by the Almighty God and to continue to thank God for his beneficence on Ghana.
Parliament resumed yesterday from recess, which preceded the general elections. Members of the House were recalled by the Speaker to among other things enable the legislators attend to “very important business, including the consideration of matters provided for in Article 71 of the 1992 Constitution relating to the determination of certain emoluments for specified constitutional office holders in the Executive”.
Also, the House was to receive President Mahama, who is scheduled to deliver the State of the Nation address to the House before the dissolution of the sixth Parliament.
