The Volta Regional Public Health Emergency Management Committee has closed the Juapong market in the North Tongu District as part of measures to control the spread of the coronavirus disease. This follows report that 16 cases had been recorded in the Eastern region, which shares boundary with the Volta Region.
The Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa, who is also the Chairman of the Committee made this known in a statement released to the media in Ho. According to him, 15 of the cases in the Eastern Region were primary contacts of the first case reported at the AFCON Camp B in the Lower Manya Krobo District.
Dr. Letsa said situational report from the Eastern Regional Health Directorate shows that there is no evidence of community spread of the disease anywhere in the region as 244 primary contacts are currently under mandatory quarantine. Contact tracing and testing for both primary and secondary contacts are also ongoing.
According to him, his outfit is putting in place measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the region. He revealed that discussions are currently ongoing with the Municipal and District Assemblies, which are facing challenges with implementation of the stringent measures put in place to prevent over-crowding on market days to urgently take further steps to reach a practicable solution.
The Volta Regional Minister also revealed that there would be screening of passengers who would be entering the Volta region through the various entry points in North and South Tongu and South Dayi Districts.
Dr. Letsa disclosed that a multi-disciplinary task force has been put in place to ensure that all private and commercial vehicles stick to the prescribed regulations. He, therefore, appealed to the general public to adhere to social distancing rule in all endeavours especially when they are boarding vehicles.
