Seven suspected armed robbers, including two National Security operatives, who invaded a mining site, subjected the workers to beatings, handcuffed and tied them with ropes, robbed them of their gold and other items, and abandoned them to their fate, have been busted by the Asankragwa Divisional Police Command.
The special operation was led by the Divisional Crime Officer, Superintendent Henry Agbeve.
The suspects, currently in the custody of the police, are Anas Adams, 35, a National Security personnel, George Ohene Adjei, 56, driver, Jonathan Aryeh, 28, unemployed, Agyeman Jackson, 29, unemployed, and Isaac Okuampah, 29, painter.
The rest are George Osei, 35, National Security, Asomdwe Park Accra, Patrick Fordjour, 29, taxi driver from Kumasi, and Samuel Obeng, 35, who is alleged to be a former military personnel.
Speaking on Kokrokoo morning show on Ahobraseye 98.5FM, Chief Superintendent Nana Kumi (Divisional Commander) told the radio station the suspects were arrested on Saturday April 25, 2020 on the Asankragwa-Wassa Dunkwa road aboard an unregistered black Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.
Regrettably, the Divisional Commander said, one Kofi Asante, who allegedly led the gang to attack and rob the miners, managed to escape.
The Divisional Commander added that a search conducted in the vehicle led to the discovery of a vehicle number plate with registration number AS 6646-20, gold concentrate in five gallons, 15 mobile phones, various foreign currencies, and four bags in which there were two military uniforms.
It is alleged that Samuel Obeng wore one of the uniforms bearing the rank of Sergeant, while Agyeman Jackson wore the other bearing the rank of Private.
Preliminary investigations, he added, revealed that the gang arrived at a mining site near Atalla, about two hours’ drive from Asankragwa, and subjected some of the workers to beatings before handcuffing and tying them with ropes.
After the attack and robbery, Commander Nana Kumi said, the supposed ‘soldiers’ folded the military uniforms into their respective bags and fled in their vehicle. The workers managed to free themselves and ran away.
The police visited the scene and managed to retrieve the damaged handcuffs, and the workers narrated to them how the suspects robbed them of their gold concentrate.
Meanwhile, the Divisional Command has informed National Security and Jubilee House over the arrest and detention of the suspects Anas Adams and George Osei.
