The Kintampo Campus of the Martin Luther King Nursing Training College, the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regional Office of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) have taken steps to curb the spread of the novel Coronavirus.
The Martin Luther King Nursing Training College, has donated quantities of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the Kintampo North Municipal Assembly to support the fight against the COVID-19.
The items include; 1,000 pieces of facemasks, packs of tissue paper and theatre gowns meant for distribution to frontline health workers, police personnel and journalists in the Municipality and the Kintampo South District.
The Principal of the School, Mr Ishaq Alhassan pledged to place its equipment and facilities at the disposal of the frontline healthcare providers as well as offer voluntary services to the public by its staff and student nurses.
He called on all to observe protocols announced by experts to prevent contracting the disease, for instance through frequent hand washing with soap under running water, social distancing and observing respiratory hygiene.
The Kintampo North Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Michael Sarkodie, thanked the School for the support and asked the people to cooperate with the Government in its efforts at stopping the spread of the virus.
The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) on their part, has appealed for mandatory working leave to non-teaching staff who are vulnerable to the Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19), as the nation scales up measures to halt the spread of the virus.
The Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regional Industrial Relations Officer (IRO) of TEWU, Mr. Matthew Abeaba Abereniya, said TEWU members, 50 years and above require the mandatory working leave to protect them from contracting the disease.
Institutions including the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Regional Library, the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Twene Amanfo Senior High and Technical School and Sunyani Senior High School, all in Sunyani, have complied with the Presidential directives and closed down, but TEWU members who are non-teaching staff are still at post.
Mr. Abereniya believes the mandatory working leave will contribute to reducing staff strength and enhance individual safety and the physical distancing protocol.
