The Western Regional Command of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has busted seventeen Burkinabe and Ivorian nationals who attempted to use an unapproved border route to enter the country.
The GIS says investigations conducted proved that the suspects had entered the country through an unidentified illegal route at Sewum in the Aowin Municipality of the region.
In a statement released to The Chronicle and signed by Moses Manford Akakpo, Western Regional Public Affairs Officer, it stated that on May 1, this year, a team of GIS officials, accompanied by personnel of the Police Service and Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) on a patrol, intercepted two Nissan buses with registration numbers GX 2137 and AS 1899-17, en route to Kumasi.
The joint operation, according to the statement, resulted in the arrest of the seventeen foreign nationals, who were all males.
The statement added that considering the severity of the security challenge which accompanies the arrest in the wake of the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, the GIS informed the Municipal security heads to convene an emergency meeting to quickly determine the fate of the illegal migrants.
The statement said at the end of the emergency meeting, a unanimous decision was reached to see to the immediate repatriation of the illegal immigrants.
For now, the statement said, the immigrants were being subjected to further investigations before handing them over to Ivorian authorities.
The statement added that the arrest and repatriation of the seventeen brings to a total of 190 immigrants busted and repatriated since the closure of the border.
The statement added that the Western Regional GIS Command, by the release, was reaffirming its unwavering commitment to ensuring the continuous maintenance of optimum security at the various border entry points into the region, legal and illegal.
