The Berekum West District in the Bono Region has commenced drilling of mechanised bore holes and expansion of water projects for the people in the district to help fight Covid-19.
The construction of bore holes in the district comes after directives by the President, Nana Akufo Addo, to all Metropolitan, Municipal and District assemblies to provide water in various public places such as markets and bus stations among others.
This intervention is to enhance easy access to potable water to fight Covid-19.
Speaking on a Sunyani based FM station, the Berekum West DCE, Isaac Osei said water is an essential commodity which must be made available to all and this is the time to take the opportunity to help fight Corona virus.
He outlined communities that will benefit from the initiative; “at least four mechanised bore holes are to be constructed at Koraso market, Fetentaa market, Benkasa market and Jinijini market, with extension to Jinijini Health Center, Jinijini Taxi station, Fetentaa Lorry station, Domfete market and other public places within the district”.
According to the DCE, the sole aim of the assembly is to enable people have access to water, as the district fights this pandemic.
Some of the traders at the Jinijini market, who are to benefit from the mechanised bore holes have commended President Nana Akufo Addo and the DCE, Mr Osei for supporting them with all the things needed in the fight against Covid-19.
“We know the country is in difficult times but the interventions by the president and our DCE show that we have good leaders who care about the people and we are very glad”, they said.
According the market women, the assembly has provided them with water, Veronica buckets, soap and sanitizers to fight the virus, and that shows how prepared the district is to defeat Covid-19
FACEMASKS
Mr Osei said that the Berekum West District Assembly has taken delivery of 2000 nose masks from the presidency for distribution while the assembly has also procured additional 2000 facemasks.
“In total, we have so far distributed 4000 facemasks to the people in the district to help curb the spread of the coronavirus”, he said.
Meanwhile, efforts by authorities in Sunyani to curb the spread of COVID-19 have offered businesses opportunities for the youth in the area.
Young men and women, mostly unemployed, have taken advantage and are engaging in the sale of locally made facemasks to raise income.
The locally produced facemasks sell for between GHc3.00 and GHc10.00 depending on the quality. The factory price for the mask ranges between GH22 and GHc8.
The Sunyani Municipal Assembly directed the mandatory wearing of facemasks, particularly among traders, food vendors, commercial drivers, motor riders, hawkers and market women.
A task-force has been set up to enforce the directive which seeks to protect the public from contracting the disease.
Almost all financial institutions, some media houses and transport unions operating in the Municipality would not do business with clients and passengers who fail to wear facemasks.
They have posted inscriptions such as “no facemask no entry” and “It is now compulsory to wear facemask” on their vehicles and at the premises of their offices.
Meanwhile, the Masks Ambassadors, a local advocacy group that campaign for the wearing of facemasks as a remedy for the spread of COVID-19, has appealed for facemasks from local manufacturers and fashion designers.
The eight-member advocacy group, made up of journalists and health workers noted that some people could not afford to buy the facemasks but are willing to use them, adding that such needy persons in society ought to be supported with the masks.
Mr Francis Owusu-Ansah, a leading member of the group told the GNA that the campaigners are to ensure that the aged, head potters, people with disability, wheel barrow and truck pushers, as well as coconut sellers have the mask and wear them.
“The aged are vulnerable and high risk population and it is always disturbing to see some of them on the street using their handkerchiefs as facemasks. I think we have to do something to support them to acquire some of the masks to protect themselves and their immediate families,” he said.
Mr Owusu-Ansah emphasised that the Mask Ambassadors are collaborating with all relevant institutions towards ensuring that majority, if not all of the populace in the Municipality, wear facemasks and adhere to other safety protocols on COVID-19.
He commended the Sunyani Municipal Assembly for setting up the task-force, which is making a huge impact in the fight against the disease.
He praised Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, the Chief Executive, for her passion in controlling the spread of not only COVID-19 but all other communicable diseases in the Municipality.
