The Bono East Regional Minister, Mr. Kofi Amoakohene, has toured the Kintampo North Municipality to monitor activities of the Municipal Assembly in the fight against the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
In a PowerPoint presentation on activities against the Covid-19 in the municipality, the Municipal Chief Executive for Kintampo North, Mr. Sarkodie Baffoe, indicated that since the emergence of the Covid-19 scourge, he had activated the Public Health Emergency Committee with the mandate to plan and execute activities aimed at stopping or slowing down the spread of the virus in the municipality.
He said that five suspected cases had been recorded, with three negative, while results of the other two are pending.
Mr. Sarkodie Baffoe said public education is paramount in the fight against the Covid-19, and so both the Public Health Emergency Committee and Information Services Department continue to carry out education at markets, lorry parks, radio stations, and communities. “Posters, fliers, and leaflets have been distributed as part of the educational drive,” he said.
He told the Minister that the Municipal Assembly had taken delivery of a number of Veronica buckets from the Regional Co-coordinating Council, Kintampo Water Supply, Joykem Roofing Company, Martin Luther College and others for distribution across markets and communities. 2,500 bottles of hand sanitisers have also been procured and distributed.
“Perhaps the most challenging among the protocols outlined by His Excellency the President is social distancing,” Mr. Sarkodie Baffoe noted.
Though sensitisation continues, adherence is low at the market and public places, and to curb this, the Public Health Emergency Committee is to decongest the weekly Wednesday Market to promote social distancing, come next market day.
The committee has also held meetings with transport operators to maintain these protocols, while the police continue to assist in checking adherence to these protocols.
Mr. Sarkodie Baffoe indicated that a 16-bedroom capacity guest house had been identified and earmarked for mandatory quarantine purposes, while the Assembly continues to screen people coming into the weekly market, carry out the planned decongestion of the market, procure and distribute nose masks, as well as carry out record-keeping of all passengers boarding vehicles from Kintampo.
The Regional Minister, Mr. Kofi Amoakohene, said the Regional Coordinating Council was monitoring the activities of all municipals and districts on the Covid-19, and would provide the needed support to enable them deliver effectively on their mandate.
He commended the Kintampo North Municipal Assembly for its commitment in the fight against Covid-19 in the region.
According to the Regional Minister, no case of Covid-19 had so far been recorded in the Bono East Region.
He added that 45 samples had been taken from suspected patients in the region and sent to KCCR in Kumasi for testing. 43 negative results had been received with two pending.
“The Regional Public Health Emergency Committee will continue to fight the Coronavirus by scaling up effectively, the tracing of persons who have come into contact with infected persons, test them for the virus, and if necessary, quarantine and isolate them for treatment, should they prove to be positive for the virus,” the Minister indicated.
