This is the second and last installment of the write-up which bore the above headline and published in this column in The Chronicle of Tuesday, May I2, 2020.
In that article, Periscope portrayed Death as an unpleasant phenomenon extremely dreaded by Mankind.
Against this background, the column passionately advocated for the strictest adherence to the various measures put in place by the government to stop the spread of the Coronavirus Pandemic (COVID-19).
Periscope observed that since COVID-19 is a respiratory disease, the wearing of the masks seemed to be the most effective of all the measures.
Now, barring any last minute hitches, the protocol banning social gatherings will be lifted at the end of May, to allow churches, some with huge followings, funerals, etc. to resume!
Some people and knowledgeable and identifiable groups such as the Ghana Medical Association have admonished the government not to lift the ban. Nobody knows what the government has in its sleeves to allay the fears being nourished that the lifting of the ban will make matters worse.
Ghana has a visionary leader who has been taking popular measures, and it is cherished and hoped that he and his team of seasoned health professionals will not be found wanting.
On its part, Periscope puts forward the following suggestions:
- Before the end of this month, the deadline of the lifting of the ban, the authorities should please see to it that the 45 companies contracted to produce facemasks, gloves and face shields do their work with military alacrity to produce enough to be distributed to the public at a subsidised price or free, if need be.
- Church attendants, Muslim worshippers, pupils and students, traditional gatherings, etc., must put on face masks. I think, the government has given a hint that the use of the masks will be given legal backing. This is in the right direction.
Indeed, Ghanaians must get accustomed to the masks in the same manner in which we have got attached, like a leech, to our underwear.
In short, the masks must be among our everyday wear. Life is sweet, isn’t it? Let’s move mountains to preserve it till our Creator calls us one by one for a higher service.
