The Ahafo Regional Security Council (REGSEC), in conjunction with the paramount chiefs, has lifted the two weeks ban placed on weekly market activities in the region, but the social distancing protocols would be vigorously enforced.
The decision was arrived at after a review meeting of the council held at Goaso, the regional capital, recently.
Addressing the media on the issue, the Regional Minister, Evans Opoku Bobie, who chaired the meeting, stated that the decision was a result of the people respecting and adhering to the various initial directives outlined by the REGSEC and paramount chiefs.
According to Mr Bobie, from May 25, 2020, traders would be allowed to the weekly market centres, but must observe all social distancing protocols.
He told the media that the Municipal and District Assemblies (MDAs) are to re-allocate part of the market spaces to other areas to spread out the population.
The heads of the assemblies, namely Asunafo North, Asunafo South, Tano North, Tano South, Asutifi North and Asutifi South, are to engage the market leaders with the view to moving some of them to satellite markets.
Another directive attached to lifting of the ban is the “No Mask, No Entry”, which means all patrons without face masks will not have access to the market centres. He stated that the traders must also comply with the “No Mask, No Entry” directive.
However, the Regional Minister, who is the Member of Parliament (MP) for Asunafo North Constituency, mentioned that the earlier directives on commercial vehicles, tricycles (pragia), motorbikes (okada) and aboboyaa remain unchanged.
Pragias must have two persons, excluding the driver, with all passengers wearing face masks. Okada must pick one pillion rider, with the rider and the latter wearing masks.
To ensure that the residents adhere to these set of directives, especially the new ones, the police have been tasked to work as expected by ensuring that people respect the new measures.
He said the police would not spare persons who refuse to comply with the directives.
“Leaders of the region are doing all they can to prevent the virus infecting the region, so all must adhere to the directives,” Evans Opoku Bobie, Ahafo Regional Minister, stated.
On May 8, 2020, the REGSEC, together with 13 paramount chiefs, placed a ban on weekly market activities for 14 days to let the residents respect the social distancing protocol, which is key in combating the COVID-19.
