The Supreme Court has scheduled June 28, 2020 to make a decision on the properties of embattled businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome to offset a sum of GH¢51,283,480.59 owed the state.
This was as Woyome could not refund the amount, resulting in the court ordering that his properties be sold instead.
However, the auctioneer has written to the Court that he is having challenges selling off Woyome’s assets.
Godfred Yeboah-Dame, Deputy Attorney General (A-G), as a result, yesterday urged the five-member panel, presided over by Chief Justice Anin Yeboah, to grant the state leave to confiscate the properties to National Security.
The application was due to the fact that the A-G’s Department cannot, on its own, transfer the properties to National Security, though it is a government institution, as that would amount to defying the express orders of the Supreme Court – that the properties be sold through public auctions.
“The auctioneer has been encountering numerous difficulties in conducting a sale of the properties by public auction, as all potential buyers who express interest in buying subsequently shy away, citing a number of factors, including the very circumstances of the instant matter,” the AG’s application indicated.
The properties involved are two residential properties at Ameri Court, Trassaco Valley, Accra, another residential property at Kpehe in Accra, as well as plant and machinery for quarry operations belonging to Anator Quarry Limited, Mafi, Volta Region.
Nevertheless, Woyome is also not giving up without a fight, hence, challenging the A- G’s application.
The superior court could not give its decision on the matter because Woyome’s lawyer has written to it that he is indisposed due to health conditions, for which reason the court has adjourned sitting to the said date.
