The AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine’s Sustainable Development Project dubbed “Tebrebie Vegetable Project” appears to be making a great impact in the lives of its beneficiaries.
Consequently, the beneficiaries have lauded the mining company for the initiative, and described it as successful, and that it had helped to boost their income levels and improved upon their livelihoods.
The Teberebie Vegetable Cooperative Project is part of many other initiatives under implementation by Iduapriem Mine to respond to the increasing unemployment situation within its host communities.
The first phase of the project involved a total of 14 farmers, who cultivated vegetables such as cabbage, watermelon, green pepper, lettuce, carrots and cucumber on an eight-acre land.
The next phase of the project will be expanded to cover 20 community farmers who will be expected to cultivate vegetables on a 20-acre land.
At a brief ceremony to present an amount of GH¢40,000 being income realised from sale of vegetables to the farmers, Stephen Adjei, Senior Manager – Sustainability of Iduapriem Mine, congratulated the farmers for the hard work and unrelenting efforts in ensuring the success of the first phase of the project.
Stephene Adjei bluntly put it: “I am extremely happy to see you succeed in this project, knowing the challenges that you faced in the beginning.”
He continued: “I have no doubt that if you demonstrate the same zeal and commitment in the next phase, another remarkable success would be chalked.”
A beneficiary of the project, Moses Hagor, expressed gratitude for the support and urged the mining company to extend the project to cover many other farmers in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality.
“For me, this project has really been a blessing, as I have been able to build a house from the sales I made,” Hagor told the short ceremony, and expressed hope the project would be extended to cover other communities.
“I hope the programme would be extended to assist other farmers in the municipality to also boost their income levels.”
Nana Kojo Minnah II, Chief of the Teberebie community, on behalf of his elders and people, thanked Iduapriem Mine for such an intervention, and assured management of their unflinching support and cooperation.
He advised the beneficiary farmers to invest the money wisely, work harder than before, and trumpet their success stories, particularly to the youth.
Mr. Karol Senker, Municipal Agriculture Officer of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), pledged his outfit’s readiness to partner Iduapriem Mine for such initiatives, as they fall in line with the government’s Planting for Food and Jobs initiative.
He indicated that they would continue to provide technical assistance and support to ensure the successful implementation of the full project.
