Under the pretence of a being bishop of Action Chapel, Derrick Kwaku Sakyi Baisie, aka Kweku Money, together with Joseph Braimah has defrauded a trader and her family off a total sum of GH¢524,300.
Derrick, together with his accomplice, Joseph, both unemployed, deployed clever tactics as “Men of God” to defraud one Regina Nunoo off GH¢75,000, and one Roland Nii Akwa Nunoo of an amount of GH¢220,000, two iPhones valued at GH¢6,800, an Apple Mac book valued at GH¢4,000, unregistered Mercedes Benz C350 valued at GH¢120,000, and a Kia Optima saloon car with registration No. GR 4925-16 valued at GH¢85.000.
The other victims are one Ethel Ofori who lost GH¢4,500, David Welbeck GH¢2,500 and one Infinix mobile phone at the cost of GH¢500, and Mable Otokor Atoquaye, GH¢6,000.
The complainants, Regina Nunoo, Rolland Nii Akwa Nunoo, Ethel Ofori, David Welbeck and Mabel Otokoe Atoquaye, are traders, businessman and unemployed respectively, are relatives and all live at Kokomlemle in the Accra.
The two are facing six counts of defrauding by false pretences contrary to the Criminal Offences Act 1960 (ACT 29).
Contained in a police brief, the facts are that Joseph, who is the first accused (A1), had been known by Regina Nunoo for barely two years.
And that Joseph goes to Tudu Market in Accra to preach the gospel to the traders, and it was during one of these occasions that he met the first complainant.
Joseph approached her that he could assist her in prayers, hence requested for her name and that of her children to add them to his prayer list.
He further collected her phone number with the view of putting her and the entire family on his prayer list by offering them special prayers and prophetic directions.
She gave out all the information he requested. However, unknown to the first complainant, A1, who has been operating with Derrick (A2), devised a means to enable them to defraud her.
The two conspired that A2 should go to Regina at the market to buy Aidan fruit, locally known as Prekese.
As planned, A2 went to where the Regina sells and introduced himself as Bishop Derrick of Action Chapel, after buying the ‘Prekese’.
To establish confidence with Regina, he started giving prophecies about her based on forehand information given him by A1.
He also collected Regina’s cell phone number to help her in prayers and prophetic directions.
A few weeks later, A2 suggested to Regina that she should allow Joseph to live in her house in order to help in the family prayers, since A1 is a true “Man of God”.
She agreed to the suggestion and allowed Al lived in her home.
A1 then started sending on a daily basis messages of occurrences in the house to A2 to formulate false prophecies.
Al and A2 gave false prophecies about deaths and accidents which were going to befall the family. As a result, the two found the opportunity to defraud the entire family off their valuables.
Regina Nunoo, Roland Nii Akwa Nunoo, and Ethel Ofori were defrauded on the basis that they would be provided with prophetic direction and protection against spiritual attacks.
David Welbeck paid the whopping sum because the two promised to heal his sick mother, while Mable Otokor Atoquaye was also promised the fruit of the womb.
However, Roland Nii Akwa Nunoo, suspicious of the conduct of Joseph who was living with them, collected his phone on February 2017, and detected some text message exchanges between the accused persons on how they had teamed up to defraud them. Joseph was then arrested and handed over to the police, where he confessed and admitted to the offences.
Derrick Kwaku Sakyi Baisie, after hearing of Joseph’s arrest, abandoned the Kia Optima saloon car at a filling station and fled to Abriem in the Eastern Region to consult a shrine.
Investigations, however, led to his hideout and arrest at Abriem at a shrine of one Nana Boameh.
He confessed he was a fake bishop and also gave the location of the Mercedes Benz in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
