The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Youth Authority (NYA), Mr. Sylvester Tetteh, has stated that the biggest investment ever made by any government in the youth of the country is the flagship Free Senior High School programme introduced by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
He said the NYA, as the gatekeeper of all youth policies in the country, is, therefore, implementing programmes and policies which are aimed at safeguarding this huge investment of the government in the youth.
Addressing a Regional Staff Capacity Building Training programme at the Promised Land Hotel near Odeneho Kwadaso in Kumasi last Saturday, Mr. Tetteh said the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) has become a profession, and called on the beneficiaries to make maximum use of the opportunities it provided.
The capacity building workshop was for the Ashanti Regional and district staff on the operational manual for the regulations of youth organisations in Ghana, the national volunteers’ corps, and the youth parliament concepts.
The CEO disclosed that the government had indicated that the NABCO staff should be given priority anytime there is vacancy for employment in the public service, and admonished the participants to be disciplined and dedicated to their duties.
He said the youth authority was working hard to resolve issues of promotion, points of entry and exiting, as well as ensure a healthy working environment for the staff across the country.
Mr. Tetteh also announced that a Youth Policy would soon be signed into law by the President, stressing that the youth groups are too many in the system, and there is the need for some form of regulation in the country.
He said, for instance, the Youth Parliament was a laudable idea, but regretted that some members of the group were abusing it in all forms, and indicated that the authority was adopting ways to regulate same.
Mr. George Orwell Amponsah, Ashanti Regional Director of the NYA, said the authority had lots of programmes, including rehabilitation of drug addicts, youth in agriculture, voluntary service, and reproductive health for the youth in the region.
He said the NYA is replicated in all the 43 districts in the region, even though it was left with ten more districts without permanent office accommodation.
