The Minister of Aviation, Joseph Kofi Adda, has given the assurance that all things being equal, the Kumasi International Airport Rehabilitation project, which was started by the government in November 2018 and currently about 55% complete, would be ready and open to traffic in April 2021.
The project involves the expansion of the runway, construction of a new passenger terminal building with modern state-of-the-art facilities, a new apron for more and bigger aircraft, multiple services facilities, and a new air traffic control tower.
The existing runway will be extended from the current length of 1,981 metres to 2,300 metres, to enable the airport accommodate wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 737-800.
The Minister, who was on a working tour of the construction site of the project being executed by the Brazilian construction company, Contractor, said the three phase project will provide jobs, boost the local economy, and enhance direct investment flow, as well as boost the local economy.
Minister Adda, who was highly impressed with the progress of work, noted that the project promises an increase of space to accommodate more aircraft and increase in passenger traffic, and enhance economic activities.
He said, when completed, the €66.35m ($75.23m) project is expected to increase domestic air traffic from about 500,000 to a million flights a year.
The Aviation Minister commended the President for his foresight in investing in the upgrading of the airport, and mentioned Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, for commendation for the release of the parcel of land for the project.
The Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company, Mr. Yaw Kwakwa, indicated that the new airport will have space for one of the biggest aircraft when completed.
According to him, the Boeing 737, used by some international airlines, could easily operate from the Kumasi Airport to reach all the major European centres.
