In March this year, Ghanaians woke up to the news about the gruesome murder of Mr Mawutor Adzahli Marcus, Assembly Member for Sogakope in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region. According to the story as narrated at that time, the suspects, who have now been arrested, went to the house of the deceased to rob him. The deceased reportedly gave out all the money on him to the robbers, but after collecting the money, they went ahead and shot him dead.
The death led to a spontaneous reaction from the residents of Sogakope, who claimed their Assembly Member was killed by hired assassins. The residents blocked the main Accra-Aflao road, which effectively stopped cars on their way to either Togo or Nigeria. The military were brought in before the authorities were able to bring the situation under control.
A police preliminary report indicated that the murder of the Assembly Member had nothing to do with contract killing as was being alleged, and that it was pure robbery. They promised to investigate and arrest all the perpetrators of the crime.
The Chronicle is happy that the police have, indeed, lived up to the expectations of the people by arresting the perpetrators of the crime.
Addressing a news conference in Accra on Monday, the Director General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), COP Ken Yeboah, named the suspects currently in their custody as Richard Adikyere (gang leader), Stephen Adzibolo, Emmanuel Hedzro and Kofi Zotorvi. The others are Christian Zotorvi and Michael Sam Obed Agornu.
According to the CID boss, a motorbike stolen at the crime scene had a tracker, which facilitated the location and identification of the bike, and the subsequent arrest of the suspects.
The Chronicle congratulates COP Ken Yeboah and his team for the feat they have achieved. Indeed, but for this in-depth investigation, the perception out there was that assassins were recruited to kill the man – contract killing as is known in the local parlance – but this has now been proved wrong.
It is our hope that Ken Yeboah and his team of crack investigators would also help the nation to resolve similar murders that have occurred in the other parts of the country. Here we refer to Mrs Josephine Tandoh Asante, former Public Affairs Manager of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, and Mr Ahmed Suale, an investigative journalist.
The gruesome murder of this lady and gentleman remains a mystery. We, however, think if the police are to follow all the leads available to them, they can resolve the puzzle surrounding these murders, and send strong signals to the criminals that they would always be tracked, arrested and dealt with according to the dictates of the law.
The Chronicle also takes this opportunity to advise properties owners to always secure their assets. The police were able to make the breakthrough in the Sogakope case because there was tracker on the motorbike that was stolen.
This means, but for this tracker, it would have taken the police a long time to resolve the murder case. Police are also human beings – they are not magicians – therefore, they need public support in their investigations. We cannot accuse them when we, as a citizens, have failed to play our part of the game.
