A cargo truck going through the weighbridge
The Internally Generated Fund (IGF) of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) is set to increase following the commissioning of a new weighbridge, truck parking lot, and office facility in the Harbour City by Quality and Quality Services.
The investor, Kingdom Exim Group of Companies, which is into the exportation of agro commodities, sank about GH¢10 million into the first phase of the facilities, sited a few kilometres from the Tema Port.
The strategic location of the weighbridge would ensure that cargo trucks that enter or exit the Tema Port are weighed to reduce overloading of vehicles to and from their destinations.
Indeed, it is a safety and much-needed facility for the huge investment at the Tema Port, where, annually, about 17 million tonnes of cargo enter to load or offload cargo.
Overloading of cargo trucks contributes to the short lifespan of governments’ investments in road infrastructure, therefore, the weighbridge would save investments in that sector and increase the lifespan of the roads.
At a brief ceremony to commission the facility, Felix Mensah Nii Anang-La, the TMA Chief Executive, was happy that Kingdom Exim Group of Companies, which is embarking on numerous corporate social responsibilities in the metropolis, had, yet again, put up a facility that would create jobs for qualified youth in the area.
He expressed the Assembly’s readiness to create the enabling environment for the private sector to set up businesses. “And on security, I can assure you that your investments will be in safe hands.”
The Deputy Minister for Transport, Titus Glover, topped up that the investment was in line with the government’s industrilisation agenda. “And for me, I must state that you’ve come to stay.”
In view of the volumes of cargo trucks that would be accessing the weighbridge and the subsequent vehicular traffic it would generate on the busy highway leading to the Tema Port and lorry terminals, Mr Glover tasked the TMA taskforce to be regular at the spot to direct and control traffic to avoid inconveniencing other motorists and commuters.
The Guest Speaker and Minister for Works and Housing, Samuel Atta Akyea, urged Kingdom Exim Group of Companies to continue with the drive of creating employment for the youth in Ghana, explaining that the government needs the full participation of the private sector to create more employment for Ghanaians.
He encouraged Kingdom Exim Group of Companies to also invest in housing.
