The incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Fomena, Lawyer Andrew Amoako Asiamah, has stated emphatically that he will win the December parliamentary election hands down and maintain his seat as Member for the Fomena Constituency.
The estranged lawmaker told The Chronicle in a telephone interview that the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako, who also answers to Chairman Wontumi, had pushed him to go solo.
Last March, Lawyer Andrew Amoako Asiamah, as a matter of principle, announced his withdrawal from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries, accusing Chairman Wontumi and the Fomena Constituency Chairman, Kwasi Nti Asamoah, of teaming up and subjecting him to “unfair treatment”.
According to him, all attempts from his office to seek redress have proved futile. He said he took the decision in order that his image and integrity might not be tainted by the avarice of some elements to enrich themselves at his expense.
He said later developments which indicated that the Regional Chairman had taken a stance contrary to that of the party called for his decision.
He said Wontumi and Kwasi Nti were bent on undermining and frustrating his efforts, hence, his decision to withdraw from the primaries.
His withdrawal from the primary and subsequent declaration to go solo was to prevent the desire of his detractors to serve as a one-term Member of Parliament.
Since 2008, the Fomena Constituency, a stronghold of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has changed its Member of Parliament, consequent to the party’s parliamentary primary.
Abu Bonsra, who won the seat in 2008 was ousted at the primary in 2011 to make way for Atta Boafo in 2015, only for him to lose at the primary to Lawyer Andrews Asiamah, now the incumbent MP, who has also seemingly fallen out with the Constituency Chairman who is accused of introducing the NPP parliamentary candidate, Philip Ofori Asante aka POFA.
Following the filing of his candidature as an independent candidate last October 5, 2020, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has removed the incumbent legislator for Fomena, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, from the party for going independent, citing Article 97(1)(g) of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic,” which states: “A member of Parliament shall vacate his seat in Parliament if he leaves the party of which he was a member at the time of his election to Parliament to join another party or seeks to remain in Parliament as an independent member.”
But, the MP, in his usual calm and gentle disposition, has said in spite of the position of the NPP, he will beat his detractors to it at the polls. “I will win the December election to teach them a lesson,” he confided in The Chronicle.
Lawyer Asiamah stressed that whether he wins the election or not, he is still a die-hard NPP member. “Deep within me, I am an NPP man. My blood and DNA are NPP through and through,” he echoed from the other end.
