At least, seven persons sustained various degrees of injury when a sniper reportedly fired into a crowd of National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters on endurance walk in the Odododiodoo Constituency in Accra on Sunday on morning.
The Chronicle’s effort for official police confirmation had been unsuccessful, however, the paper can authenticate that the James Town Police Charge Office issued medical report forms for the victims to attend any government hospital for medical attention.
The paper’s highly placed police source corroborated reports that three of the victims are said to be in critical condition and on admission at the nation’s elite medical center, Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
It has been confirmed by multiple sources that those on admission were part of the milling crowd that embarked on the endurance walk in the morning of Sunday, but what is not clear is if their injuries were as a result of the gunshots from the sniper.
The paper gathered from eyewitness account that the NDC in the constituency secured a police authorisation for its supporters to go on the endurance walk and were accompanied by a team of police personnel both in uniform and mufti.
At a place on the High Street in Accra, where a structure with inscription ‘BLUE GATE’ is situated, a sniper allegedly fired into the crowd.
The eyewitness account went on that, a group of men, in the heat of the melee, protected the Member of Parliament (MP) who is seeking re-election to represent the people of the densely populated coastal Community, Nii Lante Vanderpuij, from further attacks.
Efforts by the paper to have the Greater Accra Regional Police Command to confirm any arrests or otherwise was unsuccessful.
The MP, Nii Lante Vanderpuij, when reached confirmed the injured were being attended to at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
According to the MP, he was the target of the attackers. He went on that, every effort must be made by police to arrest the perpetrators of the crime, since the structure from where the shots emanated is known.
