Partners of the Asutifi North Ahonidie Mpontuo Water Sanitation and Hygiene (ANAMWASH) initiative in the Ahafo Region have cut the sod for the construction of a Home Water Station project to supply potable and accessible water to the people of Kenyasi No.1.
The project, which will have three boreholes with solar, 10 standpipes fitted with All Time Machines (ATMs) water dispensers, 6.7 kilometres pipes distribution network, and a overhead reservoir is targeted at a population of 7,000.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Asutifi North, Anthony Mensah, said the assembly and its WASH partners have realised that the current water system located at Kenyasi No.2, which has been in existence for 25 years, is unable to meet the demand of the residents of Kenyasi No.1 & 2 due to population increase, so they (ANAMWASH partners) thought it wise and of great concern to construct an additional one.
“After completion of this project, the issue of scarcity of water, which has been on the neck of the assembly, will be a thing of the past,” he stated with a smile.
He revealed that the presence of the ANAMWASH initiative, after its official launched by the government on 26th March 2019, many communities can now boast of accessible and potable water.
He, therefore, urged residents of Kenyasi No.1 to rally behind the contractor, and also advised those who would be employed to desist from any form or act which will be an obstacle to the progress of the work to meet the stipulated time.
On behalf of the Paramount Chief of Kenyasi No.1, Nana Osei Kofi Abiri, the Adontehene, Nana Agyenim Opambour, expressed gratitude to the assembly and its WASH partners for hearing the plea of the people, and said the initiative, which has come to stay, will end the water crisis encountered by the residents.
“Already, we have provided land for the project, indicating that chiefs are in full support, so others must do same,” he said.
He mentioned that with immediate effect, the chiefs will engage the residents, especially those who will be affected in the laying out of pipes for the project, to help avoid any form of misunderstanding between the parties involved.
The Community Relations Officer of Safe Water, Fortune Papa Ahiable, explained that the project, which is going to be a mechanised one, will be extended to homes as time progresses.
He revealed that already two boreholes were in place and samples taken to the laboratory for test to assist Safe Water know the exact treatment it needs for human consumption.
He hinted that when the project is ready for use, the residents will use ATM cards or tags to patronise it.
According to him, the residents must load their monies onto the ATM cards to allow them access to water, and the procedure, which modern, is not a difficult one because Safe Water would sensitise the residents on its use.
Fortune Papa Ahiable said the project was a package, meaning there are a lot of things on board aside the main construction of the Home Water Station.
He disclosed that World Vision Ghana and Safe Water would form teams to visit houses to educate people on other related issues of the said project.
“We thank the traditional leaders for their support and ask them to keep sharing ideas with us to make the project unique,” he stated.
The sod-cutting ceremony was attended by members of World Vision Ghana, Safe Water, Aquaya Institute, management of the District Assembly, political leaders, clergy, security services and the public.
