The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Prof. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante, has asked politicians to use national resources at their disposal for the benefit of the people and not themselves.
According to the Moderator, leaders have the responsibility to serve the people and not to lord over them.
“As leaders, you have the duty to serve the interests of the people who gave you power to rule them,” he said, stressing that ”the strength of any nation is measured, not by how many rich people it has, but by how much support it is able to provide for the poor the weak and the vulnerable.”
Rt Rev Yeboah Mante said this during his visit to the Emmanuel Congregation of the Presby Church, as part of his duty tour of the West Brong Presbytery of the Church.
Addressing the congregation on the theme; ‘Called to Service’, the Moderator noted that the Presby Church had established schools and hospitals across the country, because, apart from propagating the gospel, the church has the responsibility to serve the people.
He announced that the Presby Church would soon establish a vocational school and hospital in the area to serve the needs of the people.
ELECTION 2020
Rev Yeboah Mante called on politicians to avoid destroying their opponents just to gain power.
He said the quest to gain power to manage the resources on behalf of the people should not lead to pulling down others.
“I call on politicians to shun destroying their opponents to get power, especially during the election period,” he said.
“Let me urge politicians to stop speaking ill of other parties and embrace the good things one does, rather than always hammering the wrongs of the others,” he added.
He further urged politicians to desist from ethnic and tribal polarisation, use of vulgar language, hate speech, and the reckless use of power.
“How can we move forward as a nation when we are divided on tribal lines,” the Moderator asked, and added that “young political commentators on radio must not patronise vulgar language, and also avoid hate speech.”
Rev Yeboah Mante said young people who insult their elders because of party politics should desist from the practice in their own interest.
The Presby Moderator also asked political leaders to exhibit humility at all times in dealing with the people they derive power from.
According to the Moderator, “We can do politics as Christians by serving God and humanity.”
He urged political players to avoid violence before, during and after the December polls.
The Omanhene of the Berekum Traditional Area, Daasebre Dr Amankona Diawuo II, commended the Presby Church for its numerous contributions to the development of the country, especially in education, health and vocational training.
DONATIONS
Rev Yeboah Mante presented four motorbikes to the West Brong Presbytery to assist in its ministerial work. He also donated two computers to the Berekum Presby Senior High School (SHS) and Nafana Presby SHS.
