The government has kick-started the process to acquire 20,000 acres of land for the development of a Petroleum Hub at Bonyere in the Jomoro District of the Western Region. As a result, a stakeholder meeting has been held with the chiefs and people of Bonyere to explain to them the significance of the project.
Earlier, similar stakeholder meetings had been held with the other communities, which would be impacted as a result of the project.
Dr. Eric Yeboah, a Land Advisor at the office of the Senior Minister, told the stakeholders that the government was ready to meet with communities that fall within the hub to address issues that border on crop compensation and land purchase.
He said anything economic and of social significance on the land would be paid for, after it had been acquired.
The petroleum hub project would see the development of a water treatment plant, waste treatment plant, manufacturing of parts, and refinery among others.
The hub development is in three phases.
Under phase one of the project, an amount of $10-12 billion is expected to be invested in the project, with a total of 150,000 sustainable jobs expected to be created.
A refinery and tank farms are also expected to be set up under Phase One of the project.
On land purchase, Dr. Eric Yeboah announced to the stakeholders that the government would follow the agreed procedure with the stakeholders, so that the land compensation would be treated as an inter-generational asset.
During an open forum, the stakeholders wanted to know whether the communities that fall within the hub would be resettled, but the Land Adviser assured them that there would be no resettlement under the plan.
The Land Advisor also assured the stakeholders that under the package of developing the petroleum hub, the government would train the youth in the area in welding, fabrication and pipe-laying as a move to give them skills.
This is because the project requires skilled labour.
