President Nana Akufo-Addo, on Friday, inaugurated a sixty-bed capacity hospital at Praso in the Twifo-Atti Morkwa District in the Central Region.
The facility, which was begun by former President John Agyekum Kufuor, has been described as the panacea to the pressing healthcare needs of the people in the area.
Giving an inaugural speech, President Akufo-Addo explained that the hospital was part of the Ghana Hospital Project initiated by the Kufuor government in 2008.
According to him, the people have been waiting for the facility for far too long, adding that the “demand for a district hospital with quality has been realised.”
President Akufo-Addo, therefore, expressed the hope that residents would now gain access to improved healthcare from the Twifo Praso Hospital.
He further explained that the construction of the facility fell under the government’s broader objective of providing infrastructure for the delivery of effective healthcare across the country.
“The goal of government is to establish in our country a strong and accessible healthcare system of world class quality, which will guarantee the wellbeing of our people,” he stated.
To realise this, the government, he mentioned, had since assumption of office in 2017, provided financial clearance for the recruitment of some 90,696 nurses and other staff in the health sector
Word of caution
Nana Akufo-Addo cautioned the managers of the newly-inaugurated facility to, as a matter of urgency, take proper care of the hospital so that it could last to serve its purpose.
“I want to reinforce the call to the administrators to embrace and strengthen the culture of maintenance… It should not fall in the ways several institutions like this in Ghana have gone,” he stressed.
He noted that the edifice cost the country the nation US$339,000 million, it must, therefore, be maintained and put in good condition for many years to come.
President Akufo-Addo charged the leadership of the facility to set a good example with a periodic maintenance policy that would prolong the lifespan of the facility, because they would be held accountable for it.
Chief praises Nana Addo
Oseadieyo Kwesi Kennin IV, Paramount Chief of the Morkwa Traditional Area, expressed delight that the people of the area now had a befitting hospital.
According to him, the inauguration of the hospital would end the situation where they could not receive healthcare without travelling long distances.
“We thank you for this project which has come to fruition within your last few years in office as the President. I have bestowed the name Oseadieyo on you because you deliver when you promise,” he said.
He appealed to the President to consider upgrading the Morkwa Health Post to, at least, polyclinic status so that other residents behind the Pra River could also receive adequate healthcare.
The inauguration of the Twifo Praso Hospital brought to five the number of hospitals the President has inaugurated under the Ghana Hospital Project.
Already, similar facilities under the project have been inaugurated at Wa in the Upper West Region, the Ga East Municipal Hospital in Accra, the Ahafo Ano Municipal Hospital in Tepa, and the Tain Hospital in Nsokor.
The Ghana Hospital Project involves the design, construction and equipping of one military hospital, two regional hospitals, and six district hospitals in Ghana.
A 250-bed regional hospital in Sewia in the Bosomtwi District in the Ashanti Region is being constructed under the project.
Other hospitals being constructed under this project include a district hospital in Salaga in the Savanna Region, and sixty-bed capacity hospital in Konongo in the Ashanti Region.
Expected to be completed and inaugurated by the end of the first quarter of 2021, all the projects are being constructed by the Euroget De-Invest S.A, an Egyptian construction firm
